It is easy to go wrong with valances for windows. They are not an item that you tend to get a lot of advice about, perhaps your parents did not have them and you don’t see them everywhere so that you can learn what you like and what you don’t, what looks good and what doesn’t for various types of windows and rooms. So this means that when you go to buy window valances you have very little background knowledge to go on. Here are some ways to prevent your window valances becoming a disaster area
1. Consider Your Windows
Some windows look good with valances and some are better without. If you have a beautiful ornate stained glass window do not cover it over with window treatments of any kind. They will detract from the beauty of the window. Similarly of you have an usually shaped window try to not to add a valance which will disguise the shape of the window. This might be the case if you have a round port-hole style window or an arched window. Also consider the size of your windows. Do not put a short valance on top of a tall window or an overly long ornate valance on top of a short squat one.
2. Consider Your Room
Formal rooms suit valances which are neatly constructed in formal shapes, such as ascot type valances or those with a fixed arrangement of swags and tails. Informal style room on the other hand suit valances which are also informal in style like scarf type valances. Do not mix the two up.
3. Consider Your Color Scheme
Colors for formal valances should go well with the curtains and/or blinds. They do not need to be in the exact fabric but they need to tie up in some way with the curtains and other items in the room. You could add matching color with an edging or braid trimming and match up lining colors too. For informal valances color is less important as these often consist of nothing more than a wisp of fine muslin fabric however they need to be in the same color grouping if they are not matching, for example cream for rooms with warm color tones and white for rooms with cool colors.
