Where To Get Cheap Furniture

Whether you have just bought a new house – perhaps your first one – or are moving into a new rented apartment, the chances are you will need some furniture. Some rented housing already has furniture as part of the deal, but otherwise you will need to buy some. It is natural to want brand new stuff for a new home, but often the budget will not extend to that, after the costly process of buying, or maybe moving to a new area. But there are lots of options for getting your hands on cheap furniture; you just need to know what to buy and where to find it.

If you are looking for couches, sofas, armchairs and the like, these are probably the items you will be better off acquiring brand new if you have the money to do that. The quality of second hand ones, through newspaper ads or house clearance sales, might be pretty questionable. They are usually too damaged to be really comfortable, and in some places, fire regulations might prohibit their sale if they were new, because the material they are stuffed with is not fireproof. So avoid skimping on the furniture that contains foam filling.

Hard furniture, like dining tables, are great items that you might find very cheaply in newspaper ads; it is common for people to buy a table they like the look of but not to measure up properly, so it is either too big for the room or is otherwise not what they wanted. This is your opportunity to take it off their hands and get kitted out with a nice and affordable (almost brand new) dining room table. Even older pieces will be fine, and much cheaper; just make sure you get to inspect before buying. Look out for big cracks in the surface, wobbly legs or a heat-warped table top.

It pays to do your research, and even if you do opt to buy everything brand new, never buy from the first place you see an “ideal” piece of furniture. Try and find it – or something close in appearance and quality – elsewhere, so you can compare prices. It is possible to save a lot of money by shopping around.
