The term portable closet sometimes illicit a chuckle from others who have never seen one. They’re likely imagining a “normal” closet – the kind built into the structure of a home, somehow walking about on its own accord. Well, not exactly! Portable closets are actually a perfect hybrid between closet storage and portable storage. But what are they made of and how do they work?
Most portable closets, such as the ones manufactured by Honey Can Do and much of the units sold at Target, are made with a metal frame. This allows for a good portable metal closet to have a solid structure and be able to bear lots of weight. (Clothes don’t seem heavy? Just try moving a portable closet but take the wheels off first, and you’ll see how quickly the weight of all those shirts and sweaters add up!)

Over this metal closet frame, companies usually cover all opens with a mesh seal, enclosing the unit entirely, with zippered openings for easy access. Sometimes on the outside you’ll also find a cloth shoe rack built into the outside wall of the portable closet.
So the majority of portable closets are made of metal and cloth. Is there such a thing as a wooden portable closet? Not so much. This is when you veer into the area of the armoire more than the portable closet. And once you start building these items with wood, they get less and less portable as they get heavier and heavier.
In a nutshell then, the majority of portable closet products are manufactured of metal, usually a chrome steel type of metal, making its weight easy to manage, especially with the addition of the wheels affixed to the bottom of the structure. Portable closets made of wood and other materials are harder to come by simply because that makes the unit fairly heavy.
