A Garden Arch is a unique way to add variety and interest using hardscapes in your garden. They come in many shapes and varieties and can be built out of many different materials such as wood, metal, vinyl, and wire. If you would like to add an arch to your garden, some thought beforehand will definitely go a long way to helping you get the right arch for you.
There are many things to consider when planning your arch. Where are you going to put garden arches? How large should the arch be, will you grow plants over the arch, do you want to be able to see the arch itself or just the plants growing on it? Is there a structure nearby to secure the arch to or will it be a standalone structure? How will I fasten it to the ground so it doesn’t blow away in a windstorm?
If you are putting an arch as a gateway between two areas of your garden, or between the garden and the lawn, there are specifics to that situation. A great idea is to have the archway “frame” the scene through it. This can add much class to any garden.
You need to consider what materials you will either buy your arch built out of, or build your own. A classic do it yourself project is to build an arbour style arch with a bench in it so that you can sit and enjoy your garden. If you build out of wood, please use a variety that is suitable for outdoor projects such as cedar, teak, or redwood. Even pressure treated deck lumber is acceptable. Sealing the wood is a must to ensure that your project lasts for years.
Most areas have at least one welder or metal worker that takes on commissioned projects. If you have an archway built from metal, it will definitely be making a statement about you and your garden.
