“The performance and life of the carpet installation will depend on the quality of the carpet padding underneath”. This is basically true because carpet padding is the foundation of any carpet installation. Good quality carpet padding will not only add a softer feel to the carpet and give comfort to the homeowner, but also it will give value to the money that the homeowner have invested by extending the life carpet that they have installed.

To ensure that you have the best carpet pad, you should first be able to be familiar with the types of cat padding able in the market, which from among them would best go with your carpet and what particular type of carpet padding are you going to look for or to ask from the carpet retailer. There are many different types of carpet padding and depending of the materials used its manufacture, you will know which is good and which is not.

• Waffle/Sponge rubber pads are usually made of natural or synthetic rubber. They fall within the ½ recommended size of padding but since they are waffled or sponged in texture, the measurement commonly includes the air so you will have to choose a pad which is ½ in size and without the air. However, these pads are still suitable for high traffic areas and are durable as well. These pads offer resistant to insects and moisture and at the same time safe for people with allergies because they do not collects nor shed dust. The only disadvantage of this carpet padding is its sensitivity to heat.

• Urethane foam carpet pad is made of polymeric materials. Like the sponge rubber, these pads are also resistant to insect and moisture but they are not really suitable to be installed in high traffic areas.

• Bonded urethane pads are made from scrap of high – density urethane foam which makes them durable and long lasting.

• Foam rubber pads are made of natural or synthetic rubber which offers the advantage of resistance to insects and moisture. However, these pads have the tendency to flatten over time.

• Flat rubber pads are durable and can even be used on the second carpet installation with its fixed density of 19 -22lb. However, these pads can be really expensive over the other types of padding.

• Fiber Cushion/felt pads are made from hairs or uses scrap fiber. Environment friendly, less expensive and durable but they are suitable for high traffic areas.
Overall the key to choosing the best carpet padding is its density and the materials used for it manufacture. Choose carpet padding which is made from high quality materials so that it can withstand high traffic areas and minimize the wear and tear of the carpet above it. Choose the carpet padding which are not too soft or too thick but rather heavy.
