If you are thinking about renovating or remodeling your home and want to use some stone work then adding travertine is a great choice. This was the building material of choice for most of the structures in Ancient Rome. In fact, the Roman coliseum is the largest structure in the work composed of mostly travertine stone.
A travertine tile will usually have some sort of brown hue which fits in with most color schemes. The colors generally range from dark beige to very light tan and soft reds. Most people, when they think of a classic Mediterranean tile, picture travertine in their minds. These tiles can be used for a variety of applications from trim and accents to entire worktops and bathrooms.
Travertine wall tiles are very easy to apply because the are quite light in weight. During the formation of the stone from which these tiles are cut, tiny voids and air pockets are trapped which give the tile less bulk. These are much easier to apply to a wall than a very dense and heavy tile such as a marble.
Travertine tiles are also very popular for floor tiles but they usually need to have the face voids filled and they need to be sealed very well. The untreated tile is very easy to stain because any liquid that is spilled on the surface will seep in through the tiny fissures in the surface and then it can not be removed. A good quality sealant, when applied correctly, can protect the tile floor for years to come giving you a very impressive entryway or kitchen floor.
Travertine tile is also very popular in the garden or yard. Travertine stepping stones and pavers have been used for centuries and they have now become popular in North America also. Again, they should be sealed to keep out the elements but once they are they will last for a long time.
