If you have a large closet and a large budget, the simplest solution is to hire a closet design professional to create a custom system to optimize your closet space. You will probably end up with a beautiful wooden closet system that will coordinate perfectly with the rest of the room.

But there are also many of us that have an average size bedroom closet and don’t really want to part with hundreds of our hard earned dollars on a closet organization system. Thankfully, there are several solutions that don’t require a great deal of time or money.

Home improvement stores carry a good selection of closet organizers for both walk-in and reach-in closets. You can choose from kits that fit 3-6 feet or 4-8 feet wide closets. These systems usually work by attaching tracking to the walls and them inserting adjustable shelves and rods. They are simple to install and are usually customizable and expandable.

Another option is to buy individual organizers such as hanging shelves or shoe racks to store the particular items that you do not have a spot for. Many people find that the hanging shelves work great to organize kids closets where you need to stack a lot of folded clothes. You can also find attractive bins and storage containers at most discount stores. These freestanding organizers work well for people who are renting an apartment or living in a dorm room.

It makes a lot of sense to optimize the storage space in your bedroom closet so you can find your clothes and accessories easily and reduce the clutter in the rest of your room.

The first step to organizing a closet is to get rid of all unesseary items of clothing.  Here is what I do in my own closet.  I take out all of the items in my closet that are on hangers. I then rehang them with the open hook part of the hanger facing me. Then, whenever I wear a shirt I put it back in the closet with the open hook part facing away from me, which is the way most people hang their clothes. Then after a few months any shirt that is still hanging with the open hook facing me gets donated to charity. I am clearly not wearing the item and so I can get rid of some closet clutter and get rid of those items.  If you already know what items you can get rid of then go through your closet and get rid of them.  This will help you free up some room and give you more space than you anticipated.

Once you’ve completed the closet purge, assess your closet to see where you need more room.  Do you need more racks to hang shirts?  More shelves for shoes, purses, hats or accessories? After you figure out what items in your closet need more room, do some research to find the various closet organizers that will help give you the space you need.  When you break it down into segments it is much easier to accomplish the task as opposed to going into it without a plan.
