When you start looking for worktops for your kitchen remodel you are bound to hear the term solid wood worktop. Although these are made only out of wood they are not one solid piece. A huge chunk of wood that would be required for a wooden worktop would never be able to dry without cracking. Some people will spread anti-freeze on a large piece of wood to stop it from cracking but of course anti-freeze is poisonous so there is no place for it in a kitchen.
A solid wood worktop is actually composed of many small blocks of wood glued together to form a large, flat surface. There are three main types or styles available, the first of which is the vertical grain. With this method the pieces of wood are laid on edge so their faces are glued together and shows the edge grain of the wood which is usually very interesting. The grains are actually the growth rings of the tree and the closer the rings are together the older the tree is generally.
The second style is produced by laying the pieces flat and gluing the edges together. This is known as flat grain and shows off the knots and grain structure in the piece. This is probably the second most popular type of wood worktop. The last is called the butcher block because that is what it resembles with the pieces cut even shorter than in the other two styles and then the edges and faces are glued together leaving the end of the wood exposed. This is how butcher blocks of old were constructed because the knife will not dull by slicing into the end of the boards. These can also be constructed with alternating colors of wood which gives a checker board look.
Even though a solid wood worktop isn’t really solid it is still very interesting looking and adds a certain superior feel to your renovation.
