If you want to carpet some outdoor areas such as a patio or outdoor lounge, don’t think you’re limited to the unsightly marine carpet that you often see only in green or blue. You most often see this type of outdoor carpeting around and on boat docks and outdoor areas exposed to large amounts of rain and standing water. What most people don’t realize is that there are many more different options for using carpet outdoors than this simple marine carpet.
The area which you’re wanting to carpet will have a big influence on the type of outdoor carpeting you’ll want to use. Some carpets stand up to direct water exposure and sunlight more than others. If you do intend on carpeting an area with a lot of possible water, you may want to consider the marine carpet. But, don’t think you have to get simply blue or green. Marine carpeting simply has a rubber backing which makes it resistant to water, but you can find a large assortment of colors and patterns.
Outdoor carpeting is made up primarily of a synthetic fiber known as olefin and polypropylene. There are carpets that use this fiber which can still be used outside yet without the marine backing. Because of this, you can find olefin carpet in just about any type of patter, color, or style. Although it is resistant to mold and stains, you will want to find a fiber and color that stands well to direct sunlight if that’s where you’ll be installing it.
There are two different ways of installing your carpet. One is the traditional way carpet is installed, in rolls. However, most outdoor carpeting is installed by gluing the carpet to the service or comes with an adhesive backing that is removed and allows the carpet to be adhered to the service. Another type of installation and carpet type to consider is outdoor carpet tiles. These are really nice because you can replace only the tiles as they become worn or faded. As opposed to ripping out and replacing the entire section if you used the roll installation method.
Regardless of the carpet you choose to install, take your time and look around for something that suits your individual taste. Just remember that you aren’t confined to the traditional green or blue marine carpet.
