A cheap and fast option, that will offer the same possibilities for customization as mentioned above, is installing a do it yourself tub surround. The principle is much like the solid panels, e.g. instead of replacing the tile, solid panels are installed on top of them. Here, however, you will have to do the work itself. This might seem scary, but remember that the surrounds you purchase are designed for do it yourself installation.
