For many homeowners, they never expect their homes to be overcome by floodwaters and they certainly never expect to find mold damage from that flood. So when floods damage a home it needs the ultimate care in order for a homeowner to be successful in their mold removal efforts. It’s a task that needs to be thorough yet done as quickly as possible. Because house mold can grow on materials in less than 24 hours, it can become extremely hazardous to your health and can get out of control if its left for a short time. So as soon as you’re able to return to your home, you need to act fast in order to get things cleaned up and dried out.

Before you proceed however you’ll want to purchase some protective gear to wear during clean up. You’ll need rubber gloves, goggles and a respiratory mask to protect your health from the dangers of black mold.

You’ll also want to isolate the area where the mold is present to prevent the spores from spreading to other areas of the home. You’ll need to block off the area using a plastic sheet and duct tape. You’ll also want to cover any vents in the affected room and turn off the central heat and air system during the cleanup process.

Next you’ll want to remove any moldy, porous materials from the room by sealing them in a plastic bag and removing them from the home. Porous materials may include carpeting, upholstery, fabrics and mattresses.

Then you can clean and sanitize all non-porous materials or anything that cannot be discarded. You should always use a cleaner that is designed specifically for mold.

If possible you should invest in or at the very least borrow a HEPA filtered vacuum, which will allow you to remove any remaining dust and fungus residue from your home.

Next, clean the air by using fans and air purifiers that will help remove any remaining spores in your home.

And finally, you’ll want to run several fans and a dehumidifier in the affected room to remove moisture from the air as quickly as possible and complete the task of mold removal.
