There are a number of ways in which your walls can become damaged by water and in a lot of cases the damage could have been minimized if you identified that there was a problem in the first place. Many times you will be unaware that there is a growing water damage problem if there is a slow leak in your water pipes or if there is a crack in which rainwater is seeping in.
As the water continues to accumulate inside the home it will start to move down the walls and this is when the drywall water damage will begin to occur. In the early stages it will not be apparent that there is water on the walls but there are some signs to look for that should ring alarm bells.
One of the first signs that may alert you to the fact that there is some moisture in your drywall is the repeated growth of mold on the walls. If everything else in the home suggests that you are living in a dry environment yet the walls continue to become moldy you’ve got a definite indicator that further investigation will be required.
Look at the bottom of the walls because this is where the water damage is going to be most noticeable in the early stages. As the water runs down the wall it will eventually pool at the bottom and start to soak back up. Touching the walls with your fingers will quickly give you an idea of the moisture content in them.
Another way to identify drywall water damage is to look for any discoloration lines along the walls. If the drywall has been painted then this may be the first indicator that there is a water damage problem. The water line will generally be a light brown color and is a sure sign that water damage is affecting the wall.
Identifying the water damage is one thing but it is also important to take prompt action to arrest the source of the water as a matter of urgency.
