Whenever you have to call a plumber to do a repair in your home you want to do your best to be an informed consumer. Whether you are looking for a plumber in Atlanta or Chicago you will want to avoid hiring the wrong person. Many plumbers prey on the ignorance of the average home-owner and exploit your lack of knowledge by charging you outrageous fees and prices for very basic repairs. Here are a few simple tips that will help you spot a bad plumber:
1. The plumber shows up late.
This is one the most common complaints that consumers have about most plumbing companies. Most plumbers do their best to show up on time and if they are unable to they are very apologetic and always call ahead of time to explain the situation. Plumbing is not a desk job so it is very possible that a plumber could get caught on a repair job longer than expected and this could throw off his schedule for the rest of the day. If the plumber gives you the courtesy of calling you to explain the situation ahead of time give him the benefit of the doubt. However, if he just says sorry after showing up 45 minutes late send him on his way. If he doesn’t care enough about your time to at least call and let you know that he is going to be late ahead of time he is not the kind of plumber you want doing work in your home.
2. The plumber is unlicensed.
Far too often you will find a handyman who calls himself a plumber and is marketing himself as a professional. There is one and only one way you can call yourself a professional plumber. This is to have a license as a master plumber. Anything less is inadequate. Make sure that you are hiring a plumber and not a handy man.
3. The plumber doesn’t drive a van.
Any serious plumber will have a van that is stocked with the common parts needed for most repairs. If your plumber shows up in a Toyota Corolla chances are good that he is not in the plumbing business for the long-haul. Now if he is licensed then you could simply ask why he doesn’t have a van. It could be something as simple as a flat tire that explains why he isn’t driving the professional vehicle. You should be able to assess the situation after speaking with him but be leary of anyone who doesn’t strike you as professional.
Following these simple tips will help you spot a bad plumber and could potentially save you a lot of money and heartache in the long run.
