Installing slate flooring is a relatively easy project for the home handyman. To get the best results, follow the instructions below.
First, prepare your floor. You will need a backer board (rigid panel that provides a sound base for setting the tile). Backer board is available at most home supply stores. Secure backer board to the original floor with screws.
The next step for installing slate tile is to spread mortar on the floor surface. The mortar is called thinset. Purchase a mortar mix designed for floor use. Press the mortar into the backer board with a trowel at a shallow angle in order to make it stick to the backer board. Comb the adhesive out into a straight line, holding the trowel at a forty-five degree angle to the floor, pushing the trowel’s teeth to the floor.
You are now ready to set the tile. When setting, twist tiles slightly back and forth, to insure they set down firmly into the mortar and place proper width spacers between each one. The width is determined by how much space you want between each tile.
After you have completed laying the tile, it is time to grout. Mix the grout according to manufacturer’s instructions. Spread the grout in sweeping arcs with a rubber grout float. Hold the float at a shallow angle to press the grout fully into the joints. Remove excess grout with the grout float by sweeping the float diagonally across the tiles.
Finally, wipe the tiles with a damp sponge to remove residual grout. Be sure to remove the haze immediately by wiping them down with a damp cloth. Finally, buff tiles with a clean, dry cloth. It is recommended that you damp cure the grout by misting it twice a day for three days.
Enjoy your beautiful, durable, long lasting floor tiles.
