Floor insulation is a straightforward job for anyone who feels confident doing home improvement on their own. Insulating your floor will stop drafts, saving energy and money on your heating bills. If your floor is old, the best way to insulate it is to work from the basement.
Different types of floor require slightly different kinds of insulation and technique, but the following is a general guide to provide you with some information before you begin.
Before you start working, work out what the type and amount of insulation you require. You can buy fiberglass insulation in pre-cut lengths of batts.
Make sure you know what the R value and the type of facing of the insulation; most should come with a vapor barrier. Fiberglass insulation is available with or without facing, which is normally a vapor barrier, but it is important to check your particular brand.
If you are working from an underneath basement, you will need to obtain metal supports to hold the insulation in place. These are simply wires that slot between the floor joists. It is recommended that you wear a face mask, goggles and gloves for protection.
Working from one end of your room to the other, use the batts to install your insulation. Fill the longest areas first. Once the largest sections are covered, use cut outs to fill the smaller parts.
If you are installing a new floor, work from above and put the insulation in before the sub floor is fitted. If you have an old floor and are taking it off down to the sub floor, take off the sub floor too and put it back after you have insulated.
If you require further assistance or advice, your local builder or handy man will be able to insulate your floor quickly and easily.
