However, with the exception of the more modern gas and electric-powered fireplace systems, there are some essential fireplace accessories that you’ll need to buy in order to deal with all aspects, from light up to clean up. Fireplace Poker

This is basically a long, sharp-pointed metal rod which has a hook at the end. It comes with an insulated handle for protection from the heat emitted by burning coal or wood. In general, the size of your fireplace will determine what type of metal and size of poker will be ideal.

Grate

The grate is essentially a mesh-styled, piece of metal that is available in either square, rectangular, or circular shapes. It is designed to keep the fuel (wood or coal) above the fireplace floor. In doing so, it facilitates efficient circulation of air below the fuel, while also directing the smoke upwards and through the chimney. The design of the grate is dependent on the type of combustible material used.

Tongs

These are items that are commonly used for dealing safely with fireplace fuels, like burning wooden logs or coals. For added safety and convenience, many of today’s tongs are silicone-coated to handle high fireplace temperatures.

Screen

A fireplace screen is either plain or decorative in style and is essentially designed to protect rooms from the excessive heat of burning fuel. It also comes handy to cover the fireplace when not in use.
