Antique hall tables can be made of many types of wood but oak is one of the most common due to the fact that it has always been considered the most suitable for making the highest quality furniture. Others that you will likely find during your search would include walnut, maple, ash, chery, amongst others. These woods were usually stained with a few factory painted pieces in existance. Original finish is a plus when you are purchasing antique furniture.

Hall tables that are at least 100 years old come in a vast array of styles. They can be simple square designs such as the always popular mission console table style. They can have fancy engravings and spoon carving on certain parts. Pressed designs in tables and other furniture was popular in the late 1800s and early 1900s and applied carvings were a way to add value to pieces for people who were willing to pay the higher price. Queen anne style legs were used in the mid to late 1800s and still produced today while turned woods for legs were also used in the 1800 and 1900′s.

Metal and glass were popular materials to use in hall tables all those years ago. Some Queen Anne styled legs had metal feet added over the wood. These feet could be quite fancy and usually made of brass. Casted pieces of iron or brass were used on the feet of many turned legs. These casted pieces had claws that held glass balls. The glass ball is the part that wore on the floor. Casters with three main types of wheels were used on some hall tables. They could have wood, iron, or porcelain wheels making the piece easier to move.

An antique hall table can be used to display many items. They are good places for an antique vase, bowl, or even something like a brass table lamp. And they are not just for decorative purposes, they can be used for practical items such as a telephone.
