Beyond the Wardrobe Closet Armoire

The French had it right when they used the term “armoire” to refer to not just wardrobe closets, but any kind of free standing wooden furniture that consisted of drawers, shelving, and storage space. Originally, armoires were not so much seen as a wardrobe storage unit but as something for storing other practical household items of the times; weapons primarily, at first, and then other items such as plates and utensils and finally clothing too.

Flash forward to 2010, and most people associate the term armoire with that of the wardrobe closet. And for good reason – most armoire furniture for sale is made exclusively to function as a wardrobe closet. However, if you dig a little bit deeper, you can find many unique types of wooden armoire furniture beyond just the wardrobe closet armoire.

This includes such interesting items as an entertainment armoire, mostly used to hold a TV surrounded by DVD movies, books, and other small items relevant to entertainment, a jewelry armoire, used to store a woman’s jewelry and sometimes makeup and makeup accessories as well as jewelry, and a baby armoire, which is a kind of small wooden armoire designed for babies clothing.

Those three are the most well known armoires that aren’t for wardrobes. However, there’s still other types, such as a computer armoire (an armoire desk with space to work, basically), a corner armoire, which fits snugly into any corner and provides storage space for books and whatnot, and the portable armoire, which is a lightweight armoire that is easily moved out.

For people who are interested in outfitting their home with nice wooden furniture, the armoire is the place to start. Lucky for them, the options for armoire furniture go well beyond the wooden stand alone closet and into all types of storage cabinets for use around the home.
